| Wivenhoe – a delightful secret |
Wivenhoe has plenty of delights to charm the visitor. Its history involves fishing, yachts, dinghies, ships and smuggling; a pretty church, with a distinctive cupola on top of its sturdy tower, stands on the site of the first church, built in Saxon times. The streets are small and quaint, leading into each other and ending at the picturesque waterfront where fishing boats and small sailing craft bob at their moorings. When you fall in love with it you will join the long line of artists, farmers, writers, shopkeepers and sailing folk who have lived here and loved it too. And there’s lots to see and do!
Finally, an interesting independent view of Wivenhoe was given by Nick Fuller, location manager for the Cinema Verity & BBC comedy series "A Perfect State", who chose Wivenhoe as the location. He is quoted in the Brightlingsea & Wivenhoe Chronicle (No 95, Nov 96, p1) as saying "Before filming here we went to every single coastal village and small town from Southwold to Hastings, and Wivenhoe pipped them all. The town is one with very real people, and they have been very helpful to us. Wivenhoe is very attractive and interesting without being contrived, and we were looking for a small town with a harbour and square". In the same publication, producer Sharon Bloom is quoted as saying about Wivenhoe "It is not too villagy, not too quaint, but very picturesque".
