BROAD LANE SPORTS GROUND
Wivenhoe CO7 9HX

Broad Lane Sports Ground is managed by the Trustees of the Wivenhoe & District Sporting Facilities Trust, a registered charity, established in 1995.

The vision of turning Broad Lane Sports Ground into a well-used multi-sport, multi-club community sports ground, run by the Clubs based there, as outlined by the Trustees in 1995, is steadily being achieved.

Read the 2006 Annual Report of the Trustees. Click here (note: pdf file – 139kb)

The Ground was acquired from a private owner in 1996 with the help and support of Colchester Borough Council, the University of Essex, Wivenhoe Town Council, Wivenhoe Tennis Club, and the members and supporters of Wivenhoe Town Football Club, with the purpose of developing it as a community sports ground for the eastern side of Colchester.

A great many people visit the Ground each week and for different reasons. To date, over 250,000 has been raised to achieve what is presently there.  The Clubs and the Trustees recognise there is potential to do much more.

Broad Lane Sports Ground, covering some 10.5 acres, comprises:
– a football Stadium with seating for around 220 people, covered standing for about 1,300 people and a maximum capacity of around 3,000 people
–  a Club-house with bar (available for hire)
–  4 floodlight tennis courts
–  parking for 150 cars
–  three football pitches at the rear of the Stadium.
Wivenhoe Youth Football Club own the remaining 7 acres at the rear of the Stadium and provide four football pitches plus a floodlit training pitch.

Apart from the Wivenhoe Town teams and the 150 supporters who can turn out for a match, Wivenhoe Youth coach around 180 youngsters and Tempest have had around 220 youngsters in the 2004/05 season.

In 2003, Colchester United Ladies FC came to Broad Lane and Colchester Gladiators American Football Club have also based themselves at the Ground during their summer season.

Broad Lane Sports Ground is currently home to:

Wivenhoe Town Football Club – First Team

                                            – Wivenhoe & University Town
                                            – Under 18s (three teams)

See bottom of this page for details of news pages and links to Clubs’ own web sites.

Colchester United Ladies Football Club

Wivenhoe Youth Football Club (Under 8’s to under 16 teams)

Tempest Football Club (Under 8’s to Under 18s teams)

Wivenhoe Tennis Club

            Colchester Gladiators American Football Club

The Tennis Club’s membership is around 60 members; in 2006 the Club has appointed a professional coach to be based at Broad Lane to provide private and public coaching (click here for more info)

The tennis courts are available for public pay and play (Keys from Londis Supermarket – Vine Parade).

The courts are also heavily used during the winter months as the Tennis Club created a Winter Tennis League for all the local tennis clubs to play in.

The Trustees are keen to see Broad Lane Sports Ground used by as many people as possible and make it home to moreorganisations, as well as to improve the available facilities, especially car parking as the immediate priority.

We hope one day to acquire the adjacent field of 12 acres. This could be for more football pitches as well as sports as hockey and rugby. Our other long term plans include installation of an all-weather pitch for basketball and other sports. Of course, this is all going to be conditional on obtaining substantial grant funding!
